Material Development & Integrated Student Support

Material Development

I was really happy with the POE support resources I designed for my ICTC6212 class. I broke down the activities, giving students a step-by-step guide on how to complete the activities in alignment with the rubric. I also included handy checklists for the students to use to ensure that all elements of the activity had been sufficiently addressed. I make extensive use of worksheets in my numeracy module. As previously mentioned, practice is vital to the mastery of maths. As a result, I give students multiple worksheets during class and as homework. These worksheets are highly relevant as most questions have been taken from past tests and exams. The aim is to promote the application of content and to familiarise students with the way in which things are tested in assessments.

I have also created very comprehensive assignment briefs that have been so successful - the students' results are a testament to this.

Integrated Student Support

I try to support my students as much as possible. Often 1st-year students are overwhelmed with all the new information being thrown at them. I make it clear to students that I am always available to assist if they're confused about anything, from the module content to VCLearn to general questions about being a student at VC.

Students are also able to email me any questions and I have committed to responding within 24 hours. Click on the link below to see an example of email correspondence with a student:

Example of support offered via email.

I constantly communicate with my students via VCLearn Announcements and Whatsapp, sharing resources and posting reminders.

It is clear from the feedback that I've received that my students really appreciate the support that I offer. Click on the link below to see my December 2021 SET comments:

"Commending Jessica on always being available and timeous responses. Not many lecturers have provided us with their cellphone numbers, and without abuse, Jessica always reverted back with solutions and better approaches. She has given excellent feedback on Assignment 1 and always uploads additional worksheets."

"The lecturer was very helpful, responded to emails immediately if online when I sent the email, or latest the following day, even though I was not able joining the collab sessions live due to work responsibilities and work load, the collab recording gave me all the info I required to be able to complete my ICE task, assignments, and achieve good mark."

"Jess was a fantastic lecturer and always encouraged us to participate in her lectures"

"I really enjoyed this lecturer and found they conveyed information really well."
